SACRAMENTAL PREP

Baptism

The Sacrament of Baptism is often called "The gateway of the Church," because it is the first of the seven sacraments that we as Catholics receive. Not only in time because most Catholics are baptized as infants, but in priority. One cannot receive future sacraments without first receiving the sacrament of baptism.

It is the first of the three Sacraments of Initiation, the other two being the Sacrament of Confirmation and the Sacrament of Holy Communion. Once baptized, a person becomes a member of the Church. Traditionally, the rite (or ceremony) of baptism was held outside the doors of the main part of the church, to signify this fact. Christ Himself ordered His disciples to preach the Gospel to all nations and to baptize those who accept the message of the Gospel.

BAPTISM AND YOUR PARISH MEMBERSHIP

Parents remain the primary teachers of the faith. Faith is not transmitted through philosophical ideas. It is transmitted through active participation of families joined in prayer, service, and stewardship in the church in which they claim to be a part.

Preparation through our parish will begin your child’s relationship with the Church which lasts a lifetime. Your family becomes a part of what “church” is meant to provide. It is the nurturing of real people, living real lives all seeking to understand our God and how He walks with us through our lives each day. Your membership as a registered and participating member of our parish for at least 3 to 6 months implies a sincere desire to establish this active participation. You may be asked to update your records in order to establish your own household registration even though you have been with us since childhood under your parents’ name. You have become a new “family” with the birth of your child and that joyful hallmark means adopting your own place in our parish.

PREPARATION FOR BAPTISM

You are asked to attend two classes:

  1. Catholic Parenting/Christian Discipleship and

*NOTE: Parents should be active parishioners three months prior to seeking a date for their child's baptism. Parents must also attend two baptismal preparation classes. Please call our office for details (586-725-3051 ext. 211)
